When facing the choice between life and death, we want to live! But if resources are scarce, how would we manage?

Here are 10 clever life-saving skills everyone should know!

1. Marking trees with Chalk

If you’re going to go out hiking or camping, most parks will have the trail marked. But if you’re somewhere that the practice isn’t the case, you can still leave a marking trail so you won’t forget which path you took.

What you’ll need:

  • Chalks

All you need is some chalk, and as you travel through the forest, mark the trees with an “X” or something more convenient and easier to understand only for you, and then when you’re trying to leave, you can look for the chalk marks. Make sure to properly marked it.

2. Looking for the right direction using a paper clip compass

If you’re out in the woods, or you’ve lost your sense of direction, and you forgot your compass, fear not, there is another way.

What you’ll need:

  • Paper clip

  • Knife

  • Some water

  • Leaf

  • Cup

Put the water in the cup, cut the paperclip so it’s in a straight line. Then you’re going to magnetize the paperclip by stroking it against the knife. Then put the leaf in the water and put the straightened and magnetized paper clip on the leaf. You’ll find that this concoction creates a compass, and it will help you find your direction again.

3. Making Fire from Ice

Stranded in the wilderness of winter? You need to make a fire to stay warm, of course. But how can make fire from ice?

What you’ll need:

  • Leaves and twigs (dry)

  • Clear piece of ice (not too thick)

  • Daylight (of course)

Find the best and convenient spot, next is to prepare your stuff, angle the ice in such a way that a circle of light is on your flammable materials. It will work in a similar way like a magnifying glass, and sooner or later you’ll have some sizzling and crackling from your newly birthed fire!

4. Creating a fishing hook out of a Soda Tab

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to fish but you have no hooks, you can create your own alternative fishing hook from a soda tab.

What you’ll need:

  • Soda Can (with tab)

  • Wire cutters

  • File

You’ll want to take the tab off the soda can, and then you’ll need wire cutters and a file. With a wire cutters, cut a slant on the bottom half of the tab. Then you’ll file a smooth out the cut using a nail file. Output as shown in the picture.

5. Lighting Up Your Way

Light your way through you home or whatever obstacle you’re in during a wide power outage.

What you’ll need:

  • Your Cellphone (smart phone)

  • Plastic bottle with full of water (Clear)

Turn ON the flashlight on your smart phone, and then set the water bottle on top of your phone, and now you have more light that illuminates a larger area. Same concept with a headlamp and a jug.

Keep in mind that you only want to use this to light your path to avoid falling or brushing up against anything sharp.

6. Opening a can the alternative way using your hand

Thinking of eating snacks or meal but don’t have a can opener? We have you covered.

What you’ll need:

  • Your hand

  • Of course your can (either tuna or something, beans!)

  • Ground! of course

Just rub the top of it onto the ground for about 10 seconds, this will weaken the top of the can so that when you squeeze it, the top should pop right off. Others have done a similar thing, plus hitting the can on a sharp rock to jab a hole into the can.

7. Seeking help using a MIRROR

Stranded and you’re trying to catch the attention of a helicopter or plane? Seek help using this simple trick.

What you’ll need:

  • Mirror

  • Or any other kind of reflective surface (mobile, etc…)

You’ll need to shine your surface against the sun so that it flashes. Make a V with your hand, and place the target in between your fingers. As shown in the image, aim the reflective surface behind your V. This will ensure that the person you’re trying to reach can see the reflective surface. Also, be sure to flash your target in pulses so that they see the light as legit.

8. Fixing a tire with Grass

If you get a flat tire and you find yourself unable to get a spare, you can make your flat tire work until you find the nearest vulcanizing shop.

What you’ll need:

  • Some grass

You can stuff your flat tire with grass, and it will fill it enough with the appropriate amount of strength to support your bicycle so you can seek help to the nearest shop.

Bare in mind, this isn’t a permanent solution, and works easily for 2 wheels vehicle, why not try it with 4 wheels just in case.

9. Creating an alternative candle using

When an emegency occurs, you can make a candle out of butter in a few minutes.

What you’ll need:

  • Butter

  • Tooth pick

  • Lighter / match

  • Toilet paper

Just keep the wrapping around it, cut the end off, and then make a hole in the center using a toothpick or some small, straight object.

Then roll up a toilet paper to make your wick.

Stuff the wick into the hole, and then cover any gaps with the sorrounding butter. Light it up, and you have yourself an alternative candle.

10. Creating an alternative raft using your tarp

Stranded on an island? or you need to go down a river to reach help? but you don’t have a boat or a raft, what can you do?

Note: River or stream must be in good mode!

What you’ll need:

  • Tarps

  • Branches

Pull out your tarp, expand your tarp and stuffed it with branches, you’ll create a floating raft that you can use to run down the river to seek help. Always keep in mind that this will be a very small raft, and it’s not recommended to have more than one person. Or bring more tarps!

Be safe and ready out there!
